Kingdom of Atenveldt Scroll Texts for Kingdom Level Awards and Notes

Notes on adjusting the wording of Scrolls

Most of the scroll texts listed below are for final or promissory scrolls where the Sovereigns, recipient, and date are known. Replace the red text with the proper information when writing the text. If you are designing a blank scroll for reproduction, then the wording may need adjustment to leave blanks for the recipient and dates. You will need to leave out the names of the King and Queen as well. Simply say "We do admit you..." instead of "We names of King and Queen, King and Queen of All Atenveldt, do admit you...". I recommend that you type the text into your computer and add the correct information to the text. Make any other changes needed and print out the text in a large, readable font. Refer to this while you do the calligraphy so that you avoid the mistake of slavishly copying "recipient's name" instead of Anders der Hopfmann or whatever the name should be.

It is also allowed to alter the text of the scroll as long as it doesn't change the meaning. For example you may say, "Done by Our Hand" instead of "Given by Our Hand".

What cannot be changed in the text without specific instruction to do so

    • The name of the award
    • The instructions (We charge you with the responsibilites etc...)
    • The giver (if King and Queen it cannot be changed to Queen alone etc.)

What a scroll must have in the wording
    • Who is giving it
    • Who is recieving it
    • What it is (award, thanks, charter, etc)
    • When it was given
    • Signatures
If it is a final award, grant or patent of Arms it must include as well
    • A blazon in red ink, or some other color that makes it stand out
    • An emblazon (a painting of the blazon)
    • Signature of the Kingdom Herald
    • Signatures of their Majesties
    • Seals of the Kingdom Herald and their Majesties

    Punctuation, spelling and capitalization.

You can split a word anywhere you want if you are filling the textura border to border. In this case use a slanted hyphen to indicate that the word is finished on the next line. I prefer to follow modern hyphenating rules or not hyphenate at all to make the text easier to read. Then I fill the unsightly gap with a decorative element. Commas and apostrophes were not invented yet, so use of them is optional. Even if it is not laid out that way below, the text can be divided into several paragraphs, each begining with a fancy inital cap.

Spelling was not standardized until modern times and often words for the same thing were spelled in different ways in one paragraph! The only place spelling MUST be correct is in the names and blazons.

Don't try using thee's and thou's unless you really understand the proper way to use them. Otherwise you may be taking liberties with the sovereign's feelings towards the subject. Don't say "greatly pleased" or other such superlitives for the same reasons. "Pleased" alone should suffice.

Any pronoun refering to the Sovereigns should be capitalized as well as the word it modifies. Example: We, Our Hand, Our Pleasure. Germans tend to capitalize any noun and if you chose to throw in excessive capitalization, you should make the Royal pronouns stand out with extra gold or color.
